In this week’s podcast, Jennifer Richmond and Elizabeth Spievak speak with new ILV friend and (fingers crossed) advisor, Dr. Nafees Alam. Nafees is a heterodox social work professor who is bringing viewpoint diversity into his classroom. He is reinvigorating “point-counterpoint” strategies to get his students to explore different opinions and mindsets with compassion and empathy. He uses this style in a lot of his writing where he has considered different perspectives on issues such as “toxic masculinity” and trans sports.

Bio:
Dr. Nafees Alam is an award-winning professor (2022 Golden Apple Award) specializing in nonprofit program evaluation and macro practice, with over seven years of experience. Before academia, he worked in Wall Street’s financial sector for over seven years. Dr. Alam’s research agenda is self-determination in sport social work with a secondary focus on viewpoint diversity, open inquiry, and constructive disagreement in higher education. He has several publications and has presented at conferences worldwide, including two keynotes. He aims to disseminate ideas through many public platforms as a contributor to the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, Heterodox Academy, Inside Sources, Psychology Today, and Real Clear Education. He is passionate about global education through technology, teaching and designing online courses taught globally, along with his YouTube channel and Podcast geared toward an international academic audience.
Outside academia, Dr. Alam is a fitness model, actor, and super heavyweight boxer registered with USA Boxing. He was also a collegiate boxing and youth football coach registered with USA Football, aligning with his experience playing tight end as a semi-professional football player. He was elected to the Special Olympics Board of Directors and volunteers regularly with local homeless shelters, designing and delivering courses related to finance, technology, fitness/nutrition, self-esteem, and healthy friendships, winning the 2023 Community Partner Award. In addition to volunteering, he prioritizes humanitarian and philanthropic investments as the founder of several international scholarships, including the Doctor Nafees Alam Scholarship.
